The next day when I went to pull it out to use the machine made a loud whining noise before the trains engaged. Now I have to pump the forward pedal to get it moving.

If the wiring does not reveal any problem and a clutch adjustment does not resolve it, it may be time to replace the clutch. Also check on here.
